There are many reasons to ask about sedation at your next appointment. Some patients struggle with getting the treatments they need because of their anxiety. While Dr. Shumate ensures you won’t feel a thing by numbing you with local anesthesia, sedation can help minimize your nerves. Whether it’s for a lengthy procedure or a complex treatment, sedation is available to you.
You can choose from one of our two options:
Our practice also has cozy amenities to ease your anxiety. For example, you can feel calmer with help from a weighted blanket, known to minimize stress and anxiety. Headphones are also available for you to wear. Sometimes blocking out the sounds of equipment is just what you need to feel calmer. If there is another way our team can help you feel at ease, let us know. We will do what we can to meet your needs.

Over the years, we have found that at least one of our sedation options will benefit any patient. If you’re nervous about your visit with us, you’ll have your choice of sedation options. We’ll discuss each one in detail, answer any questions you have, and help you decide on the method that’s right for you.
You’ll have a choice of two sedation options. We offer inhaled sedation using laughing gas and IV sedation that will put you in a deeply relaxed and dreamlike state. Their sedative effects range from mild to deep, so these methods fit the needs of any patient who is nervous about receiving dental care.
If you’re receiving laughing gas (nitrous oxide), you can usually have a light meal a few hours prior. However, for IV sedation, we will typically ask you to fast for a longer period, usually 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. We will provide specific guidance before your procedure. Following these instructions is crucial to ensure the effectiveness of the sedation and your safety.
