I do this because I really enjoy helping people, whether it’s helping them with their health, their smile, their confidence. That’s why I love doing what I do. A lot of people come to me, maybe they’ve gotten to kind of have a guarded smile or something like that.
They’re lacking some self-confidence. If we’re able to help them just a little bit in that, I feel rewarded. I feel like we’ve helped somebody.
I love the fact that we’re able to help them with their physical health because everything’s tied in with your mouth, your body, all that’s tied in together. Just being able to help them with that is great. I got into dentistry just because I love medicine.
I love the idea of helping people, but I also like working with my hands. It was an easy transition for me to go into dentistry, and I’ve wanted to do it since I was in high school, and it’s just been a passion of mine my whole life, and I would never want to do anything else. Over the years, I’ve taken thousands of hours of continuing education on all kinds of different disciplines, whether it be just basic general dentistry, a lot of cosmetic aesthetic things, implants, orthodontics.
I’m one of maybe 3% of doctors that have graduated from the Coy’s Institute in Seattle, which I feel was one of the most life-changing things for me. I’ve worked with dentists all over the world, so I’ve got this camaraderie and base of other doctors around the whole world that I consult with about different things. It’s made me a better practitioner, and ultimately, it helps our patients.
Some of the advanced training that I’ve done has allowed me to see some different types of ways of doing things that you’re not taught in dental school. It’s, again, a collaboration of people from all over the world that have these different techniques to where we take lots of weird pictures and have them wear glasses that are different, and it gives me thousands of measurements to where I can look at somebody’s face, facial measurements, and be able to design a smile that is specific to them. There’s not a lot of other people that have that skill.

Dr. Shumate and his staff are wonderful. I’ve only had great experiences there. I’ve moved from that area and have tried multiple other dental offices in Wilmington and they just don’t compare. Christina up front is helpful and very efficient at her job. The office is clean and runs smoothly. I highly recommend Porters Neck dentistry to all.

Anyone who’s ever been to PNFD knows how great they are:) the front desk/admin ladies are amazing and always so sweet. The hygienist are also top notch and super informative. My 11 yo just had an appointment today and when we left she herself said, “I love coming here, I always get the best hygienist.” Dr. Shumate is quick but extremely efficient and always prepared to answer any questions. I’d recommend them to anyone!
