I think what Dr. Shumate did for me was listen, and we talked about what it was that I wanted. And what I wanted was to smile freely and to have comfort when I do that. Right from the mold and how they photograph your teeth and then recreate them, I could see how it was building in steps because I would get the temporaries first and I’d get an idea of what it looked like. And I thought, you know, “These look pretty good. How could it look better?” And indeed it did look better when they put the real thing in. It makes me smile a lot more freely now.
I was very self-conscious of my teeth and my smile. I mean, getting old isn’t easy. That was one thing I thought that I could really address. And it has given me a lot more confidence in terms of just being easy and smiling freely. I’ve even had friends tell me now, you know, that I’ve known you for a while and you’re very smiley now. I thought that was a compliment and I was really happy to hear it actually.

Coming to Dr. Shumate and the fact that I was able to be comfortable, overcome my fear, and get things taken care of in my mouth and on a dental routine the way I need to be, not only made me feel confident about my smile and my breath, what my teeth are gonna look like after getting braces and getting them straightened, but also it just made me feel really confident about myself and the fact that I had overcome a fear that had really dominated me for so many years.
It has made all the difference having the work done. I underestimated what a difference it would make. I can actually chew easier, so there’s the practical angle of being able to eat a whole lot easier. All of my chompers are good now, and just the confidence to be able to smile and not be self-conscious about teeth. Our smile is everything.
I am a braces kid. So, after three and a half years, I think I had braces on, or two and a half years, I still wasn’t happy with my smile. It was still not the complete picture that I wanted. I’m a big smiler. I talk all the time. I’m a very happy person. And it was just some cosmetic touches that I needed and I wanted to have. And I came in and Dr. Shumate did a consultation with me and we were able to make it work. I definitely wanted it done before my wedding and he was able to work it in, do my crowns in the front, and get my smile to a picture-perfect smile before my wedding. And I did have all the confidence in the world when I was doing my own wedding photos.
The staff at this office is very professional and very kind, and just the joy to interact with. They’re all very helpful. I hadn’t been to the dentist in over 30 years, mostly because of fear. I was terrified, but I knew I had to do something before I didn’t have teeth at all. So, I chose Porters Neck Cosmetic and Family Dentistry because when I came for my consultation, I wasn’t embarrassed. I felt at home. I felt comfortable, and I felt like they were in it with me on this journey to help me get through my fear and to take care of my teeth and mouth the way they needed to be done.
Came for my first consultation just to kind of see. Dr. Shumate let me know I had four impacted wisdom teeth that I had had for over 30 years that needed to come out. I had two teeth that had been cracked or somehow had, you know, been problematic, and I also had five cavities. In addition to that, I had 30 years of buildup and plaque that needed to come off. So a deep clean was needed. And right away, he said, “We can take care of all of it. We can do it in a day.” And I trusted him. I looked at him and knew that he could, and so made the appointment and, yeah, came in at 8:00 in the morning, left everything taken care of.
Immediately I felt better because I knew that there were things in my mouth that were causing bad breath and me to be concerned about that, I mean, even with my husband. That’s what really drew me in is, you know, one day when he finally said something and I knew we weren’t gonna live that way. So, yeah, I went home so proud of myself that I had not only come in, but I had gotten everything taken care of in one visit, and truly so excited for the next time I would go for my teeth to be cleaned. Since then, I’ve had teeth cleanings and I’m getting Invisalign braces.

So, by the time I came here to this practice on the recommendation of a friend, I needed, I wanna say, eight or nine crowns and a bunch of bonding. So, a lot of work that I put off for a really long time and we did it in steps, all of the work. But it is completed. I can smile now and feel confident about it. And I recommend the practice for all of my friends.
So, I was at another practice, they had did some crown work for me. I was very unsatisfied with the work. I was having issues closing with my bite and things like that. I went, came back here, had a consultation. Luckily, Dr. Shumate was able to correct those things. He replaced those crowns from the other dentists, and also I had some cosmetic work done. I wanted some crowns to my front teeth just because I had some natural decay done that was developing in those areas and I wanted my smile to be amazing and before my wedding at that. And so he was able to get me in, we got everything scheduled. And for my wedding day, everyone talked about my smile and how beautiful it was and how beautiful I was. And that meant a lot to me. It meant a lot to me. And I, actually, was crying when I got ready, and my smile, and the complete picture together.
We moved here in Wilmington upon my retirement in 2016 and needing a dentist because I had a lot of work done when I was in the service with the Navy and a post-retirement surgery and it came highly recommended from everybody that was in our neighborhood and I haven’t been anything but satisfied. It has been great. And then Dr. Shumate himself be just, he’s concerned, he pays attention to your concerns, he listens and he provides super recommendations on well, maybe we ought to think about doing this, try this.
And also the lovely ladies in the office are just so nice and so understanding. Sometimes you have to cancel, sometimes things pop up. So really I think the doctor permeates his personality down through the practice.

You can always expect that to be on time when they make an appointment. You will be seen relatively closely to that time. You’re going to love the staff.
